Niche Down or Miss Out: Why Your Podcast Needs a Laser Focused Audience

You’ve heard it a million times... “The riches are in the niches.” It’s marketing 101, right?
But are you really niched down enough?
When it comes to podcasting, many make the mistake of casting too wide a net. They think, “If I talk about enough topics and try to reach everyone, I’ll naturally grow my audience.”
Spoiler alert: that rarely works.
I’ve been on shows lately where the subject was pretty much, “What do you want to talk about?” and honestly, audiences don’t respond well to that. They want to know what to expect... clear, predictable, and trustworthy content.
Think about your own habits, would you binge watch a TV show that had no consistency in themes or style? Would you flip to ESPN if you had zero clue what sport or game they’d cover that night? Probably not.
Predictability creates trust.
My wife likes it when I’m predictable... holding the door for her, coming home around the same time... those little things build trust and comfort.
Your podcast needs that same predictability for your audience.
They should know who you’re talking to and what you’re talking about every time.
But here’s the hidden mistake: many podcasters say, “I’m for business owners.” That’s still way too broad.
Business owners of what? Tell me more. Sales strategies? B2B or B2C? Lead gen or closing techniques?
If your podcast is just “business,” you might as well be vanilla ice cream... classic, but it blends in with all the other flavors out there. And nobody remembers vanilla content.
The solution? Get hyper niched. So precise it feels like you’re speaking to one person — ideally, someone you actually know or can picture clearly.
Forget demographics for a minute. Forget assumptions about a 35 year old guy living somewhere you’ve never been. Instead, talk to a real person. Reach out to someone in your network... a LinkedIn connection, a client, an industry peer, and ask, What do you need? What problems are you facing? What keeps you up at night?
Yes, you think this narrowness might shut people out. The truth is it opens doors to a much more engaged audience... because you’re exactly the show they need.
And by speaking directly to your niche, your content will spill over to adjacent audiences naturally. You’ll expand, but in an authentic, sustainable way.
So ditch the wide net. Niche down, and do so relentlessly. Cut topics that don’t serve your persona. Know who you’re talking to better than anyone else does.
And when you do, your podcast won’t just be heard... it’ll build trust, authority, and real relationships.
