Editing a podcast can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re staring at an hour long recording filled with "ums", "you knows", awkward pauses, and random background noises.
But the truth is, every great podcast starts as a messy raw file. The trick is knowing how to clean it up without losing your mind (or your day).
Here’s how to turn chaos into a polished episode, step by step.
1. Cut the fluff
Raw audio always has some extra “stuff” you don’t need.... whether that be long pauses, filler words like “uh” and “like,” or that time your guest’s dog barked in the background. (We've all been there!)
Editing this out makes your episode tighter and more engaging.
How to do it: Use your editing software to zoom in and cut out unnecessary sections. Don’t get too nitpicky, though.... leave in some natural pauses and quirks to keep it real. Podcasting is all about authenticity and there's something nice about the charm of a raw recording. Overediting can make it sound robotic, and no one wants that.
2. Level out the audio
Ever listen to a podcast where one person is whispering, and the other sounds like they’re yelling into a megaphone?
Yeah, don’t be that podcast.
Leveling means balancing the volume across all speakers so no one’s riding the volume controls while listening.
How to do it: Most editing software has tools for this, like clip gain adjustments or automation. If you even want to take things to the next level, use a compressor, it evens out the loud and soft parts automatically. Just keep it subtle... you don’t want it to sound like everyone’s shouting through a tin can.
3. Clean up background noise
Even in a great recording setup, you’ll have some unwanted noise... chair squeaks, distant traffic, or that faint hum of your fridge. Cleaning this up makes your episode sound professional.
How to do it: Use a noise reduction plugin to remove consistent background noise. Tools like iZotope RX or even the built-in options in your editing software can work wonders. For random noises (like a cough), just cut them out entirely.
And remember, silence can be your friend, so don’t be afraid to insert it where needed. It is ironically one of the most powerful tools a podcaster has.
Editing doesn’t have to be so intimidating. Start with these three steps: cutting fluff, balancing levels, and removing noise, and you’ll be amazed at how much better your podcast sounds.
Just remember, progress beats perfection. Each episode will get easier as you practice and refine your workflow.
